The making of a style queen: How Kate Middleton is single-handedly changing the face of fashion

By Maysa Rawi

Preppy princess: The Duchess of Cambridge wears a cable-knit cream dress on her visit to Prince Edward Island for day five of the Royal tour

In the world of eight-inch platform heels, mini skirts and oversized it-bags, one dainty Duchess is choosing more subtle ways to make her mark on fashion.

On the fifth day of the Royal tour, Kate wore an elegant cream and navy long-sleeve cable knit dress with pussy-bow neckline by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen for her visit to Prince Edward Island.

The 1920s-style preppy dress is a move from her usual style but will no doubt be a sell-out hit.

Vintage visit: The 1920's style dress featured tie detailing and pleated skirt with navy bordering

It has been well documented that Kate Middleton's marketing power - known as the Kate effect - ensures anything she is seen wearing is sold-out within hours.

But what continues to come a surprise is how Kate can turn the notably 'un-fashionable' into an instant hit.

The simple nude Vanessa dress by Joseph she wore on Sunday in Quebec City has unsurprisingly now sold out.

Baring arms: The Duchess of Cambridge wore a sleeveless Joseph dress yesterday

Fashion formula: Kate sticks to knee-length sheath dresses, court shoes and clutch bags

While some labeled her outfit choices over the weekend 'boring', Kate's samey style is what will ultimately ensure her iconic status.

Speaking about the grey Catherine Walker dress Kate wore on Saturday, associate fashion news editor at Canadian fashion magazine Flare Mosha Lundstrom Halbert said: 'I wanted to see her step it up in terms of the fashion quotient, and she didn't do that today.'

Although she has never been seen in a pair of highly coveted Christian Louboutin shoes, or sporting a weighty Hermes Birkin on her arm, Kate still has the ability to shift thousands of copies of a simple Zara dress.

Thrifty: Kate recycled an Issa dress she wore the night before her wedding, right

Wedged espadrilles, low-heeled court shoes and longer-hems, though once labeled as old-fashioned or 'mumsy', have become instant hits among young shoppers.

This would come as little surprise to industry experts who know an icon becomes so by playing against type - Audrey Hepburn after all attracted attention for wearing boyish Capri pants and ballet flats while counterparts like curvy Marilyn Monroe wore 'fashionable' nipped-in waists and cleavage-enhancing bras.

Ironically, it is Kate's conservative approach that has placed her so strongly on the radar.

High-end labels: The Duchess wore Issa, Erdem and Roland Mouret

Yet critics began to bemoan her obsession with the High Street and urged her to turn to higher-end labels.

And on the first day of her Royal tour, sporting a Roland Mouret dress and Manolo Blahnik heels (when we have come to expect Reiss and LK Bennett), Kate proved she was paying attention.

Now on her fifth day, she continues to opt for luxury designers including Issa and Katherine Walker and now McQueen - the label she chose for her wedding dress.

But not one give into ostentation either, she recycled the white Nano Reiss dress, the same design she wore for her formal engagement portrait last year and the bird-print Issa dress she wore on the night before her wedding.

She also paid tribute to the country she is visiting with a red maple tree hat and diamond brooch borrowed from the Queen and opted to twice wear Canadian-born designer Erdem.

It is hard to believe the savvy sartorial choices come from a woman who has always professed to have little interest in fashion.

The bags: The Duchess always accessories her outfits with a clutch

The shoes: Katherine favours low heels, either wedged espadrilles or court shoes

But bravely eschewing a professional stylist, the Duchess of Cambridge's carefully chosen wardrobe, consisting of over 30 outfits, is an indication that she isn't simply indiscriminately choosing pieces that appeal to her, but rather making a deliberate statement.

Tall and thin, Kate's slender figure would give most models a run for their money, and while most looks would suit her, she has chosen to stick to a simple but effective formula.

She rarely strays from a knee-length sheath dress, boxy jacket or blazer, court shoes and a clutch bag.

Sleeves are often short or three-quarter length but she does very occasionally bare her arms, like yesterday for instance in a nude 'Vanessa' dress by Joseph, also now sold-out.

Fine jewels: The Duchess has a different pair of earrings to match her outfits

Accessories queen: Kate matches her blue Erdem dress to her earrings, left, and wears a diamond brooch borrowed by the Queen, right, and a Lock & Co. red hat

Her trademark look is not new - Kate's capsule style has been the same since she started dating the Prince.

But as she has been increasingly thrust into the limelight, her style has continued to mature and develop.

Gone are the 'Sloaney' flat knee-high suede boots and frosty pink lipstick and she is paying more attention to her accessories with a healthy stock of Anya Hindmarch handbags.

Her taste is jewelery has also changed. Whereas it was always rather understated, Kate is now sporting sophisticated brooches, carefully selected earrings and of course, the stunning sapphire engagement ring.

The demure outfits - skirts never too short, heels never too high - are telling details.

Kate knows who she is and isn't easily swayed by passing trends.

Her wardrobe choices indicate qualities in her character: stability, loyalty and self-assurance.

As the tour is halfway underway, Kate will no doubt continue to impress industry movers and shakers and it surely won't be long before she is invited to cover Vogue - if she hasn't been already.

Whether the shy and understated Kate decides to accept the offer is another matter.

Either way, the best is yet to come - and refreshingly, there won't be mini skirt in sight.

In the navy: Prince William and coordinated Kate board plane to Canada as ten-day royal tour begins

By Maysa Rawi

Jet set: Kate Middleton does understated chic as she prepares to board a plane to Canada at Heathrow airport today

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge proved they were in perfect sync as they boarded a plane to Canada today.

Wearing matching navy blue, the couple were pictured on the runway heading to the Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft at London's Heathrow Airport.

They are expected to land in Ottawa at 2pm local time.

Kate was the picture of understated elegance on the runway in a blue shift dress and matching blazer with gold buttons.

She accessoried with blue court shoes and a £895 Mulberry handbag.
William wore a suit of the same colour and a red tie.

With her hair freshly blow-dried, Kate's glossy mane will no doubt continue to look flawless throughout the trip as she is rumoured to be travelling with her hairdresser James Pryce.

Her wardrobe has been kept under wraps but potential outfits have been an endless source of speculation over the last few weeks.

Kate is said to have hired a personal shopper at London department store Selfridges.

But whether she will stick to her favourite High Street stores or mix and match with designer labels remains to be seen.

Either way, the couple are on a tight schedule.

William and Kate's arrival in the Commonwealth country is eagerly anticipated and their appearance later in the capital is expected to draw thousands on to the streets.

They will be celebrating Canada Day in Ottawa, opening the Calgary Stampede and canoeing in the Northwest Territories before taking off to Los Angeles.

Canada's prime minister has even unveiled a personal flag for use during William's visit.

It is the first flag to be created by Canada for a member of the royal family since 1962, when the queen adopted a personal flag for her own use in Canada.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the flag was approved by the queen and William.

The Canadian secretary to Queen Elizabeth II and the chief organizer of the trip Kevin MacLeod said: 'I think given the youth and the dynamism of this couple they will simply continue to reaffirm the important role the crown plays in this country.

The young prince also plans to demonstrate his skills as a helicopter rescue pilot by taking part in a water landing demonstration, and the couple is scheduled to put on aprons and take part in a cooking workshop in Quebec City.

Perfect match: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will land in Ottawa later today to start their ten-day tour in Canada and U.S

Fresh-faced: Kate looked groomed to perfection, with freshly blow-dried hair while William looked elegant in a blue suit and red tie

Some anti-royal protests are expected in the French-speaking province of Quebec, with small groups planning protests in Quebec City and Montreal.

The prince and Kate jet to Los Angeles on July 8 and will host a gala dinner there the next night to introduce up-and-coming British film talent to Hollywood executives.

The southern California trip includes a $4,000 three-course meal and a charity polo match up close with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as they are formally known.

On duty: William talks to James Wright, the Canadian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom

Private transport: The couple are travelling on the Royal Canadian Air Force plane

So far, about 1,000 VIP tickets have been sold to the polo match along with about 400 general admission passes, raising nearly $4.4 million for the July 9 event. William plans to play in the match, and his wife will award the trophy to the winning team.

William will be celebrating Canada's birthday on Friday, the same day his mother Diana would have turned 50.

He is due to say a few words at a number of stops. Kate is not scheduled to speak.

The couple will travel from the sub-Arctic to oil-rich Calgary, Alberta, from busy Montreal to bucolic Prince Edward Island of "Anne of Green Gables" fame.

They'll sit around a campfire with young people, dress casual for the Calgary rodeo, join a cookout in Quebec City and hand out flags to newly-minted Canadians at a citizenship ceremony.

All in white Kate is Queen of the Centre Court as she and Wills come to Wimbledon to roar on Andy Murray

-The Duchess was wearing Temperley's Moriah dress which is on sale for £395 - but cost £795 before the sales started

By Lauren Paxman

Happy couple: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge sat in the Royal Box on Centre court at Wimbledon

Tennis fans are sweltering in the 31c heat at Wimbledon today, but The Duchess of Cambridge looked as fresh as a daisy in a pretty white dress in the Royal Box on Centre Court.

Kate and William were at the tournament to cheer on British hopeful Andy Murray.

She has been a tennis fan for years - as have all the Middletons.

Pretty layering: Kate followed Wimbledon's specification that players must wear white

Pippa has attended the French Open and the Aegon Championships since her big sister's wedding earlier this year, and a polite thank you letter Kate wrote to Wimbledon a few years ago is currently on display at the All England Club.

Murray is being touted as Britain's strongest chance of a Wimbledon men's winner since Fred Perry in 1936.

The Scottish player won the Aegon Championships title on June 12, and is playing the French number 17 seed Richard Gasquet.

But all eyes were on the Duchess rather than the players on Centre Court today.

She was wearing Temperley's Moriah Dress which is on sale for £395 - but cost £795 before the sales started.

Pretty detailing: The white disks on Kate's shoulders will also remind Wimbledon-goers of a less successful recent fashion statement... Bethanie Mattek-Sands' jacket

The pretty, pleated white dress that gave a big nod to the skirts being worn by the women on the grass courts. But it also showed off Kate's thin waist and the layers gave her a beautiful silhouette.

The white disks on the shoulders will also remind Wimbledon-goers of a less successful recent fashion statement... the Lady Gaga-esque jacket Bethanie Mattek-Sands wore on Thursday, shortly before losing her first match.

Kate looked as composed as we have come to expect from the unflappable Duchess.

She chatted and joked with Gill Brooke, the wife of the Chairman of the All England Tennis Club who was sitting by her side.

The relaxed tennis fan also leant back to give Jane Henman, Tim's mum, who was sitting behind her, a kiss on the cheek before exchanging a few words with her too.

Kate wins over the crowd and a very shy little girl as she once again shows her maternal side

By Daily Mail Reporter

Maternal instinct: Kate has paid particular attention to young children during her Royal engagements

The Duchess of Cambridge wowed the crowds at her first military engagement yesterday - including one young fan who was overcome by shyness in the presence of the Royal Family's newest member.

Kate, 29, bended down to chat to the girl - who was there with her mother - and later reassuringly touched her head.

Prince William watched on, smiling, as his wife displayed her natural sense of ease with her royal duties.

Looking stylish in a navy military-style dress adorned with buttons, Kate was handing out medals to soldiers at Windsor's Victoria Barracks who have recently returned from serving in Afghanistan.

It was the first time that the royal couple have visited the regiment since William became Colonel of the Irish Guards in February - a role which is close to his heart.

The 1st Battalion Irish Guards returned in April from a six-month tour in Afghanistan where they were deployed to 22 different locations in Helmand Province, tasked with developing the Afghan Army.

'I stand before you with pride and humility. I am proud to be your Colonel. I am humbled by the thought of the sacrifice that you and your families have made,' said Prince William.

It's not the first time Kate has appeared broody.

At her first Trooping the Colour earlier this month, she focused her attention on Lady Helen Taylor’s daughters Eloise, eight, and Estella, six, and Viscount Linley’s daughter Margarita, nine, who had been one of her bridesmaids.

The Duchess of Cambridge took on her first military role as a royal today as she handed out operational medals to members of the Irish Guards.

Alongside the Duke of Cambridge, who is Colonel of the Irish Guards, Kate presented medals to soldiers who have recently returned from serving in Afghanistan.

A royal aide said the Duchess was very pleased to be undertaking the role for a regiment 'so close to her husband's heart'.

The 1st Battalion Irish Guards returned in April from a six-month tour in Afghanistan where they were deployed to 22 different locations in Helmand Province, tasked with developing the Afghan Army.

Six soldiers returned home two weeks before the royal couple's wedding day and had ceremonial duties to perform in London on the day.

The Duke of Cambridge spoke of his ‘pride and humility’ today as he presented the medals.

He emphasised his respect by saying he was ‘proud’ to be the soldiers’ colonel and was ‘humbled’ by the thought of their sacrifices.

‘I can only imagine what the campaign medals you receive today must mean to you,' he said.

‘Along with thousands of others back home, I followed your tour in Afghanistan with a mounting sense of awe.

‘Over the years and decades ahead when you look at this medal, I'm sure it will bring back so many conflicting memories.

‘Sadness for those who did not return, and thoughts of their families who received their Elizabeth Crosses today.’

On parade: The medal ceremony was the couple's last engagement before they go to Canada at the end of the month

Warm reception: William also spent time talking to the soldiers who attended the parade

It is the first time that the couple have visited the regiment since William became Colonel of the Irish Guards in February.

He also wore the regiment's striking red uniform on his wedding day.

The unit was heavily involved in the ceremonial duties but its servicemen are also fighting soldiers.

Before the medal parade, at Victoria Barracks in Windsor, William and Kate met privately with the families of three fallen servicemen and the Duke presented them posthumous Elizabeth Cross medals.

Guardsman Christopher Davies, Major Matthew Collins and Lance Sergeant Mark Burgan were all killed in action in Afghanistan.

Major Collins, 38, from Blackwell and Lance Sergean Burgan, 28, from Liverpool were killed in an explosion just six days before they were due to return home from their tour.

The pair died on March 23 when their vehicle was caught in a blast from an IED (improvised explosive device).

Guardsman Davies, 22, from St Helens, died from a gunshot wound on 17 November 17 last year which he sustained during an ambush by insurgents in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province. His brother John Davies serves in the same battalion.

The royal couple handed out approximately 50 medals to the soldiers.

They both gave medals to two men wounded in the same blast that killed Major Collins and Lance Sergeantt Burgan.

William awarded Guardsman Manneh, who lost both his legs and his left arm, and Kate handed a medal to Lance Corporal Scott Yarrington, 26, who had to have both his legs amputated as a result of the explosion.

The Duchess of Cambridge made her way down the line of troops asking each of them about their experiences on the front line.

Royal couples: Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were also on royal duty as the pair attended celebrations for Armed Forces Day in Edinburgh, Scotland

Private Nadine Gwendu, 25, from Newhaven, Brighton, who is originally from Zimbabwe, said meeting the Duchess was ‘like a dream come true’.

‘Also it was so important for William, the Colonel, to present our medals and we all really appreciate that.’

Sergeant Paul Paterson, Regimental Police Sergeant, Irish Guards, said it was an honour to take part in the event, even if it was a quick turn-around after his return from Afghanistan.

The 33-year-old, from Liverpool, said: ‘We only had seven days from the last man leaving Afghanistan to prepare. We had to get our bearskins, tunics and boots ready and to practise all the drill movements.

‘But it is an honour to be a part of any royal historical event - with the Duke's ties to the Micks it made it extra special.

‘It was also an honour to serve in Afghanistan but the Royal wedding will be talked about for years.

Political presence: David Cameron, left, watched the event in Edinburgh with Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond, right

The Duke of Cambridge paid tribute today to the ‘extraordinary’ soldiers like Sergeant Paterson, who within days of returning from fighting in Afghanistan, took part in his marriage celebrations.

William said: ‘As Catherine and I rode through the centre gate of Buckingham Palace on our wedding day, there you were, formed up as the Queen's Guard with your commanding officer at your head.

‘If ever there was an illustration of why the Foot Guards, and the Micks in particular, are special, that was it.

‘To exchange combat kit for ceremonial uniform in the space of two weeks is nothing short of remarkable.

‘To be amongst the most proficient in the world wearing both is just simply extraordinary.’

So THAT'S how she manages without a stylist! Kate 'using personal shopper to help with wardrobe for U.S. and Canada tour'

The Duchess of Cambridge is said to employ the services of style advisers at London department stores Selfridges and Harvey Nichols, which stock many of her favourite labels...

By Tamara Abraham

Style advice: The Duchess of Cambridge is believed to have been using personal shoppers at Harvey Nichols and Selfridges to help her put together a wardrobe for her upcoming U.S. and Canada tour

She doesn't have a stylist, and will not be bringing a dresser on her upcoming tour of the U.S. and Canada. But it seems the Duchess of Cambridge is not without some assistance when it comes to making sartorial decisions.

According to new reports, Catherine has been consulting personal shoppers at her favourite London department stores, who help put her looks together.

Grazia Daily revealed today that the 29-year-old has been using style advisers at Selfridges and Harvey Nichols to help choose a wardrobe for her first trip abroad as a Royal wife.

It claims that Catherine has been consulting the same person used by her husband, Prince William, and his brother, Prince Harry, to do their Christmas shopping.

But her decision to buy her clothes at high-end retailers indicates that she may be stepping away from here favourite High Street labels, such as Reiss, Whistles and LK Bennett, in favour of designer pieces.

While in-store style advisers can offer sound advice when it comes to style and fit, they are not a substitute for a bona fide stylist.

Grazia explained: 'Where a personal shopper will help you to pick out outfits under your direction, a stylist will be more creative and will direct your style.

Retail therapy: Selfridges, on London's Oxford Street, stocks many of Catherine's favourite labels - but appointments with its personal shoppers are highly coveted and can book up weeks in advance

'[This] is interesting in terms of Kate because it’s another mark of how confident she is in being able to style herself - confidence which is very well-founded, if her recent sartorial choices are anything to go by.'

The stores' personal shopping services are free to customers, but appointments are highly coveted and slots can book up weeks in advance.

Catherine has certainly stepped up her style game since her wedding, and her sartorial choices, have been universally well-received.

Grateful Kate and the handwritten Wimbledon thank you letter... with a spelling mistake

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Flashback: Kate Middleton in the Wimbledon crowd three years ago. There are rumours she will be back this year

As one would expect from the future Duchess of Cambridge, she had impeccable manners.

But unfortunately for the then Kate Middleton, a handwritten letter to the All England Club has revealed that spelling is not her strongest point.

Despite her public school and university education, her note thanking club officials for a visit in July 2008 contains two mistakes.

In the letter, just unveiled in Wimbledon’s museum, she writes quite instead of quiet and confuses ’till with ’til.

Kate, whose brother James suffers from dyslexia, is a former pupil at Marlborough College, whose current boarding fees are £29,000 a year, and went on to study at St Andrews University.

This is a rare example of her handwriting before she joined the Royal Family and had flunkeys to check, or even write, letters for her.

Oops: One of Kate Middleton's errors

In a two-page letter displayed in a glass cabinet, she wrote in looping script: ‘Dear Sir. Thank you for your kind hospitality at Wimbledon last week. My friend and I had such a fantastic time and it was great to be able to enjoy the day knowing that we could have a little peace and quite if things got a little too hectic.

‘It was a wonderfully relaxed day and we even spent part of it on the “Henman/Murray Hill”, which was great fun. I really was not expecting to be looked after with such hospitality and I certainly wasn’t expecting to see any of the Centre Court games.

‘I do hope the end of the tournament runs smoothly and this fantastic weather lasts ’till the end of the week.

Rumours: Kate Middleton may attend this year's tournament before going to Canada and the U.S. with Prince William

‘Thank you again for making it such a fun and easy visit.’

The note, whose address is covered by a strategically placed Union Jack flag, is signed off: ‘Best wishes, Catherine Middleton.’

It is believed the duchess was consulted and gave her permission for it to be revealed to the public – perhaps unaware of her errors.

Speculation is rife at SW19 that she will visit with her sister Pippa before leaving for her first official royal tour of Canada and the U.S. with Prince William.
